    Speakers

    Mayor Richard Bissen

    Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen took office in January 2023 after retiring as Chief Judge of the 2nd Circuit Court on Maui. His career of public service spans 34 years, including 17 years of distinguished service on the bench, where he was the first Mental Health Court Judge. He was a founding member of the Maui Drug Court in 2000 when he was Maui County Prosecuting Attorney. He has also served as First Deputy Hawaiʻi Attorney General and Acting Director of the Hawai’i Department of Public Safety. As mayor, his commitment to provide access to government for all residents led him to start Holomua Kākou to bring government to residents of outlying areas of the county. He and members of his administration have traveled to Molokaʻi, Hāna and Lānaʻi to run county government for two days from those remote communities. Mayor Bissen is a 1979 graduate of St. Anthony High School in Wailuku, where his grandson now attends school. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Santa Clara in 1983 before returning home to earn a Juris Doctor Degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1986. His accomplishments as a judge earned him the prestigious Hawaiʻi Jurist of the Year Award in 2021. In 2022, after five and a half years of studying the healing art of Hoʻoponopono – an art of making things right or restoring relationships, especially in families – Mayor Bissen completed his course of study along with six other haumāna. He and his wife, Isabella Kaʻihikapulani Eleneki Bissen, have three adult daughters and three grandsons.

    Brigadier General Christopher Faurot

    BRIGADIER GENERAL CHRISTOPHER K. FAUROT, USAF (Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, United States Indo–Pacific Command) Brig. Gen. Christopher K. Faurot is the Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, United States Indo–Pacific Command. He is the principal advisor responsible for effective integration of the Reserve Component in support of the Combatant Commander's theater campaign plan. General Faurot was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and is a 1989 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Transportation. He has served in a variety of positions at the squadron, group, wing, and headquarters level and flown as an Aircraft Commander, Mission Commander, Instructor Pilot, and Evaluator Pilot. Prior to his current assignment, General Faurot was the Commander, Guam Air National Guard. General Faurot is a Command pilot with over 2,600 hours in the C[1]17A, F-22A, F-15A/B/C/D, T-38, and T-37 aircraft, including combat sorties in support of Operations Provide Comfort II and Southern Watch.

    Alana Kobayashi Pakkala

    Kobayashi Group

    Alana Kobayashi Pakkala, Managing Partner, leads the Kobayashi Group’s strategic planning, sustainability and workforce/affordable housing efforts. She also manages architectural and interior design, proforma and construction projects, and sales & marketing. From a multi-generational family, Alana was raised in Hawaii and loves bringing up her two young daughters with her husband in the islands.

    Liya Safina

    Safina & Shektman, Inc.

    Liya Safina is a digital design director and innovation expert living in Hawaii, currently working with Google’s AR/VR team. Over the years Liya has experienced a variety of leadership scenarios, from bootstrapping a startup to designing for the future city currently being built by Toyota in Japan. Her most recent work in the field of AI promises to create innovative live game viewing experience for NBA fans. With over a decade of experience in digital innovation, her vision is to build a future where technology serves human needs, instead of humans serving revenue models.

    Carl Bonham

    UHERO

    Carl Bonham was a founding member of UHERO in 1997 and currently serves as UHERO’s Executive Director and Professor of Economics. Carl’s research interests include macroeconomics, applied econometrics and forecasting, tourism economics, and the Hawai`i economy. His current research focuses on mixed frequency models for nowcasting inputs for UHERO’s quarterly Hawaii Forecasting System. Recent publications include, “Long COVID and Unemployment in Hawaii” with Ruben Juarez and Nicole Siegal in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, “Forecasting in a Mixed Up World: Nowcasting Hawaii Tourism”, with Ashley Hirashima, James Jones, and Peter Fuleky in the Annals of Tourism Research, and “A Policy Analysis of Hawaii’s Solar Tax Credit” with Makena Coffman, Sherilyn Wee and Germaine Salim in Renewable Energy. Dr. Bonham has served on the State of Hawaii Council on Revenues since 1996, the House Select Committee on Covid-19 Economic and Financial Preparedness from 2020 to 2021, and Governor Green’s Build Beyond Barriers Working Group from 2023 to 2024. Carl also serves on the board of Child and Family Services.

    Jerry Gibson

    Waikiki Beach Marriott

    Jerry Gibson is President of the Hawaii Hotel Alliance and on several volunteer Boards in Hawaii. Most recently, he is working with the owner of Atrium Hotels on re-imaging the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa after a $100 million dollar re-enhancement of the property. Recently, he also redeveloped the Turtle Bay Resort, one of Hawaii’s most iconic hotels over the last few years for Blackstone. He has 44 years of hospitality experience in Hawai‘i, and lends his time, talent and expertise to a dozen industry and community boards, including Vice Chair of the Honolulu Police Commission. Gibson is well known as an advocate and spokesman for the tourism industry, and most recently holds the position as the President of the Hawaii Hotel Alliance. Gibson’s hospitality experience spans the Continental United States, offshore, and also includes positions in Europe. He has served in leadership roles in operations and food & beverage with leading brands such as Hyatt and Marriott, in addition to his tenure with Hilton. He was based at Hilton Hawaiian Village, in charge of 23 hotels and 12 timeshare projects. Since returning to Hawai‘i in 2008, Gibson has served on boards for the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Tourism, Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association where he was elected president, the Hawai‘i Hotel Owners Roundtable, the Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau as president, Honolulu Festival Foundation, UH Hotel School Advisory Board, Japanese-American Society of Hawai‘i, Waikiki Improvement Association, Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District Association, American Red Cross of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Chamber of Commerce. Gibson has also been integral in fundraising for Kokua for the Haiti, Philippines and Kokua for Japan campaigns, raising over four million dollars for natural disasters in these countries. Gibson, in conjunction with the Institute for Human Services, has also raised two million dollars to help with Oahu’s homeless population.

    Unyong Nakata is the Founder and Principal of Nakata Advisory, LLC, where services are focused on catalyzing business development and operational alignment. Unyong is driven by the core values of integrity, excellence, and compassion; her diverse experiences have cultivated a unique toolkit to complement her obsession to create brand equity, alignment, and organizational efficiency through the most important asset – people. Unyong is proud to serve on the boards of the Salvation Army, Domestic Violence Action Center, Navian Hawaii, and the Patsy T. Mink Center for Business and Leadership. Unyong has been recognized by Hawaii Business Magazine as one of the “20 for the next 20,” the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii as the “Young Professional of the Year,” Pacific Business News for “Women Who Mean Business” and “Forty Under 40,” and by the AFP – Aloha Chapter as the “Outstanding Professional Fundraiser of the Year.” Unyong served as the host of the Hawaii Business Magazine Podcast for the first two seasons. Unyong holds a bachelor of science in Microbiology and a master of business administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

    Karen Codilla

    Karen Codilla is the Corporate Director of Commercial Strategy at Prince Waikiki, bringing extensive experience in hospitality. Previously she was the Corporate Director of Revenue and Distribution at Outrigger Hospitality Group and has held roles in operations and sales at independent hotels and in the online travel space at Travelocity. She holds a bachelor's degree in literature from the University of California San Diego and an MBA from Golden Gate University. Karen is actively involved in industry education as a former lecturer at the University of Hawai'i's EDIT (Executive Development Institute for Tourism) program and serves on the national HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International) revenue optimization advisory board. She also co-chairs the HSMAI Commercial Strategy Conference, demonstrating her commitment to advancing industry practices.

    Alexandra Walterspiel

    Alexandra Walterspiel is President and Chief Operating Officer of Sensei, a wellness hospitality company that delivers enriching and evidence-led programing at its award-winning, ultra-luxe properties in Hawaii and California. In her role, Walterspiel not only oversees the business side of the organization, but also drives the company’s business development efforts with the goal to expand the reach of Sensei in both stand-alone retreats and wellness clubs, further positioning Sensei as the leader in the luxury wellness space. With over 30 years in hospitality, she has an unparalleled background in the luxury and lifestyle segments of the industry, having previously worked with esteemed companies such as The Ritz-Carlton, Ian Schrager’s Morgans Hotel Group and Sage Hospitality. Prior to joining Sensei, Walterspiel owned and operated her own company, IMPRINT Hospitality.

    Chip Fletcher

    University of Hawaii at Manoa

    Dr. Chip Fletcher, is the interim Dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and Director of the Climate Resilience Collaborative research team. He is Professor and past Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences and past Chair of the Honolulu Climate Change Commission. Chip is special advisor to Governor Josh Green for Climate and Resilience, and serves on the Governors Climate Advisory Team, and Decarbonization Working Group. Chip’s research focuses on assimilating global trends in decarbonization and climate projections, integrating climate projections for Hawai‘i to understand future shocks and stresses driving adaptation needs, and modeling the impacts of sea level rise in Hawai‘i. Chip teaches Earth Science, and Climate Change, and with his students has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific research papers. He is the author of three textbooks on: 1) Hawaiian shorelines, 2) Climate change, and 3) Earth Systems. Chip is a frequent public speaker, and contributor to local and national media. He has been principal advisor in funding and awarding over 35 graduate research degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences.

    Todd Wynne-Parry

    The hospitality and travel industries and have been a part of Todd’s life for nearly five decades. He financed his way through school by working in restaurants, bars, hotels and resorts in Michigan, Scotland, and Arizona. After graduate school, he began his career as a hospitality consultant in the San Diego office of Laventhol & Horwath. He eventually went on to manage the Hong Kong office of Horwath Asia Pacific consulting throughout Asia. He then spent 25 years as a business development leader for major brands including Marriott, Starwood, and IHG in the Asia Pacific region and for Commune Hotels and Resorts and Two Roads Hospitality globally. In 2019, he was brought on to help AutoCamp grow their start-up Airstream based glamping brand. During this time, he grew enamored with the burgeoning outdoor hospitality sector of the lodging industry. Building upon his experience and belief in the growth potential of this sector, he formed Montare Hospitality Advisors to bring professional advisory services to this young and vibrant new form of accommodation. In 2022, Montare Hospitality Advisors became part of the Horwath HTL global hospitality consultancy group where Todd heads up the firm’s Outdoor Hospitality Advisory Services. Todd earned an International MBA from Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management and is a member of the International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC). He sits on the advisory council of the American Glamping Association and consults to glamping site owners, brands, and investors. He is a regular contributing writer for the Glamping Business Americas magazine and has been featured in Hotel Management magazine and on industry podcasts including “No Vacancy” and “Glamping Americas”. He regularly appears for speaking engagements at international hospitality conferences and events including Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), the Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS), The Glamping Show Americas and the Eco Resort Network Summit. Based in Bend, Oregon, and Mill Valley California, , he enjoys fly fishing, woodworking, and glamping in his vintage 1953 Airstream flying cloud.

    Doug Johnstone

    The Howard Hughes Corporation

    Doug Johnstone is President of the Hawaii region for The Howard Hughes Corporation. In his role, he oversees asset management, financing and redevelopment initiatives. He has led the growth of the 60-acre master-planned community of Ward Village. At full build-out, the award-winning neighborhood will introduce nearly one million square feet of dynamic retail experiences and thousands of new homes to the heart of Honolulu. Previously, Doug managed value-add redevelopment efforts within the commercial real estate portfolio of Kamehameha Schools. Prior to Kamehameha Schools, he served as Vice President of the boutique Los Angeles firm Cyburt Hall Partners, where he focused on opportunistic investments and developments with institutional joint venture partners. Born and raised in Honolulu, Doug attended Punahou School and Stanford University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics with Honors. He is a member of the Hawaii Business Roundtable, Young Presidents’ Organization, Omidyar Fellows, and serves on the board of directors for Aloha United Way and HomeAid Hawaii.

    Jordan Kostelac

    Founder, deploy

    Jordan Kostelac is the founder of deploy, a next-generation social network that helps source the best deals in private markets from domain experts. Prior to founding deploy, he served as the Asia Pacific Director of PropTech for JLL in Hong Kong, overseeing the PropTech platform across the region and advising real estate decision-makers on business strategies and transformation programs through a technology lens. Jordan is an active voice of the global Technology, Innovation, and Future of Work space both online and at industry events. He was responsible for managing the first cohort of Propell Asia, the joint accelerator programme between JLL and Lendlease. In addition, Jordan founded UrbanLab, the first dedicated Proptech accelerator in Mainland China. Outside of his established status as a Workplace Futurist and Asia Pacific’s PropTech Provocateur, Jordan serves as a partner in two Hong Kong craft breweries and acts as an advisor to HKWalls, an internationally recognized arts festival originating in Hong Kong.

    Kelly Olinger

    Kelly Olinger is Senior Vice President, Development for Hilton Grand Vacations (HGV). In this role, Mr. Olinger is responsible for the strategic oversight of the company’s development, construction, project management and relationship management teams. In addition, he leads the cross-functional efforts in rebranding recently acquired properties to Hilton Grand Vacations Club and Hilton Vacation Club.

    Daniel Cho

    Head, M&G Real Estate, M&G Real Estate

    Daniel Cho is the Head of Korea of M&G Real Estate, a UK-based investment manager. He oversees M&G Real Estate’s investments, asset management, and business operations in Korea. As of 2024, M&G Real Estate Korea manages approximately KRW 3.1 trillion in assets, invested across eight properties in sectors including office, logistics, and retail. Globally, M&G Real Estate has an AUM of USD 50 billion, with approximately USD 8 billion in Asia. For the Asian market, M&G Real Estate invests in Korea, Japan, Australia, and Singapore, managing one of the longest and most established funds in Asia. Before joining M&G Real Estate, Mr. Cho worked at investment firms such as KKR, and, Singapore-based companies, Mapletree and Ascendas, gaining experience in investing and managing core, value-add, and opportunistic projects across various sectors, including office towers, logistics centers, and mixed-use developments. Mr. Cho holds an MBA and an MS in Real Estate from Cornell University in the US, and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Yonsei University in Korea.

    Ryan Churchill

    President, Pacific Rim Land, Inc.

    Ryan Churchill has over 25 years of experience managing all aspects of real estate investment and development throughout Hawaii. Ryan has been with Pacific Rim Land, Inc. since 2015 and is President of the Maui-based company. Pacific Rim Land develops and invests in a variety of real estate assets including residential, industrial, retail and hotel properties primarily in Hawaii. Prior to joining Pacific Rim Land, Ryan was President of Maui Land & Pineapple Company (ML&P) and was responsible for executing ML&P’s strategic transactions and managing the Company’s diverse real estate holdings and Kapalua Resort operations. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson and his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine. Ryan is a director of the Maui Economic Development Board and has been a ULI member for over 20 years. Ryan was born and raised in Kailua, Oahu and has lived on Maui for over 25 years.

    Bryan Copley

    Bryan is a leader in the Proptech industry with over two decades' experience at the intersection of real estate, technology and finance. In 2016 he co-founded CityBldr with Devyn Cairns, pioneering the use of AI in commercial real estate. Bryan is a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences and collaborates with universities including Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, and more on the topics of real estate, design, housing policy and engineering. A husband and father of five, Bryan enjoys hiking, music composition, sports, chess, gaming, reading, writing and family trips to Marymoor Park with his dogs Rainy and Pepper. He believes deeply in the importance of building better cities, and is dedicated to contributing to his home city of Redmond, WA in his role as a planning commissioner.     Jeff Pauker is Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Alexander & Baldwin, a Hawai’i-focused, publicly traded real estate investment trust with over 150 years of operating history in the Islands. As head of the company’s Investments team, he is responsible for core and opportunistic real estate investments and property dispositions, as well as strategic asset and portfolio planning and capital markets activities. Prior to joining A&B, Pauker was an attorney with the San Francisco office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, a global law firm, where he practiced transactional real estate law on behalf of developer and investment fund clients. Pauker also worked in management consulting and private equity for Monitor Group, now a division of Deloitte. Pauker is a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School. Pauker has served on numerous local professional and community boards, including the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai’i (for which he currently serves as Vice Chair), the Hawai’i chapters of the Urban Land Institute and NAIOP, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth.

    Lindsay Brugger

    Vice President, Urban Resilience, Urban Land Institute

    Lindsay Brugger is Vice President, Urban Resilience for the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a global nonprofit organization comprising more than 45,000 real estate and urban development professionals dedicated to advancing the Institute’s mission of shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. Ms. Brugger leads ULI’s Urban Resilience Program to advance the real estate industry’s understanding of climate risk, catalyze action to reduce vulnerability, and support communities in becoming more climate resilient. A licensed architect, certified passive house consultant, and frequent speaker, Ms. Brugger has worked for over a decade at the intersection of resilience, adaptation, and the built environment. She began her career as a practicing architect; extending her services to Architecture for Humanity DC where she co-founded and directed the Resilience by Design Program. Prior to joining ULI, Ms. Brugger was the Director of Resilience Knowledge and Engagement at the American Institute of Architects. During her tenure, she championed resilience, climate adaptation, and disaster assistance; creating tools and resources to help AIA’s 95,000 architects build new skillsets, integrate resilience into practice, and support their communities pre- and post-disaster. An avid partner in advancing resilience action throughout the building industry, Ms. Brugger often serves as a subject matter expert on climate adaptation and the built environment, supporting organizations and initiatives such as the National Institute of Building Sciences, the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit. Ms. Brugger received a Master of Architecture and B.S. in Architecture from Roger Williams University; as well as the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for her leadership and service.

He also brings first-hand knowledge of the markets and demand drivers in Hawaii, Guam, and Micronesia. His global hotel brand experience includes positions with Outrigger Resorts and Marriott International. At Outrigger, Kevin sourced resort properties and management contracts in Hawaii, Micronesia, Okinawa, and Mexico. At Marriott, he secured management and franchise contracts in Hawaii for Marriott’s brands. He was directly responsible for adding the Edition Waikiki and Courtyard Hotels in Waikiki, Kauai, Kona, and Maui. Kevin previously spent a decade at commercial real estate firm CBRE, rising from Associate to Executive Vice President. He provided a full range of advisory services, including seller side brokerage, acquisition analysis, and valuation services for hotels, golf courses, development land, and industrial, retail, and office properties. Prior to moving to Hawaii, Kevin worked for the Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan in its Tokyo headquarters, overseeing loans made throughout the Pacific on a variety of property types. Kevin’s early career included positions at banks and financial regulatory agencies. Kevin earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and master’s degree in real estate from the University of Florida. He is an active Hawaii Real Estate Broker and serves on the programming committee of the Hawaii chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He is a former board member of The Pacific Club.

    Jon Wallenstrom

    Alaka'i Development

    Jon Wallenstrom is a principal with Alaka‘i Development (AD) and is working to create a smarter future for Hawaii through innovative development. Jon has developed over 14 million square feet over the course of his career in Hawaii and over 800 apartment homes on Oahu. Jon also served as managing member and Chief Operating Officer for Forest City’s Hawaii-based partnership with the Department of the Navy and President of Forest City Hawaii. The $2B development was conducted on a portfolio of 6700 homes with the majority being demolished and replaced. In addition to the new construction, hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on historic renovations, energy efficiency, and other improvements. Prior to moving to Hawaii, Jon was among the busiest multifamily developers in the mid-Atlantic where he had his own company, was a Regional Vice President with Archstone Communities, and started his career with JPI. Jon holds an AB from Princeton University.

    Bettina Mehnert

    A respected visionary and leader, AHL’s president and chief executive officer, Bettina Mehnert, FAIA, LEED AP is a force in the evolution and innovation in Hawaii’s architectural sector. Her philosophy blends a focus on sustainability, technology, firm culture, client cultivation, and community service as inseparable filaments of professional leadership, keeping her 77-year-old firm firmly faced towards the future. In recognition of her management style and leadership, Mehnert has been honored with numerous awards and in 2016 was named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architecture (AIA), a prestigious honor held only by 53 architects in Hawaii since 1948. She was named CEO of the Year by Hawaii Business Magazine in 2019. In 2018, Mehnert was appointed to the new five-member Honolulu Climate Change Commission. She uses her background in architecture and engineering and her expertise in the built environment to advocate for strong resiliency policies. A licensed architect in her native Germany, Hawaii, and Guam, she is an active member of AIA Honolulu and International Chapters and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) where she serves on ULI’s National Council on Responsible Property Investment and Advisory Services Panel. She is a director of the Blue Planet Foundation, a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of Hawaii Energy, Hawaii’s Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Regional Representative, and a member of Hawaii Green Growth’s Sustainability Business Forum. Mehnert also serves on the board of Public Broadcasting System (PBS) Hawaii and as a trustee of St. Andrew’s Schools. Most recently, she participated on a United Nations Global Compact panel of Hawaii’s thought leaders on “Regenerative Global Futures” during the UN’s annual general assembly.
