Rod MacLean, Facilities Assistant, whom has been with the Vancouver Convention Centre for 30 years, will show attendees around the Centre's West building, describing its architecture. The main focus of the tour and the bulk of the hour event will be spent on the Convention Centre’s Living Roof. We will be able to walk out onto the roof and learn more about how it was technically achieved, how it is maintained, and the sustainability benefits it offers. We will also learn about other sustainability features of the building, in particular its on-site blackwater treatment facility.

Constructed in 2009, the Vancouver Convention Centre’s western expansion is certified LEED Platinum and its 2.4 hectare living roof is the largest non-industrial living roof in North America. In the face of increasing population densities and the impacts of climate change in urban areas, many cities in North America have adopted legislation to encourage or mandate the construction of living roofs. As such, tour of this facility is timely as living roof construction is projected to become more common.

Attendees will meet in the lobby of the Vancouver Convention Centre West, 1055 Canada Place at 5:30pm.
