ULI BC is thrilled to be the recipient of one of WLI’s Sprout Grants!
Below is a recap of our event “Wherefore Urban Education” held on September 13, 2019.
In an insightful discussion on the complexity of urban cities, the Honorable Rob Fleming, Minister of Education, along with ULI BC, SFU Urban Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Morris J. Wosk Centre hosted a conversation on what urban education means today in BC and was moderated by Adjunct Professor of Urban Studies, Ken Cameron.Climate change was at the forefront of the discussion, concluding that there is a lack of sustainable infrastructure in our education sector. Along with acknowledging reconciliation and decolonization and the importance of intergenerational learning and pent up demand in school investments were also focal points of the conversation. There was a unanimous consensus that there is a need to engage “city citizens” by drawing from a well-spring of theory and practice to collectively come together to build stronger relations and nurturing our environments.A promotion of health literacy, moving towards more physical and health-related educational programs were discussed along with mindfulness which the group hopes to see integrated into a new curriculum that will benefit the future.
