    On Wednesday, November 25th from 12:00pm -1:00pm, the ULI Young Leaders Group will be hosting a webinar panel to discuss past successes and challenges faced in developing purpose-built rental housing in Greater Vancouver. Get a chance to hear from industry leaders as they provide their lessons learned and future expectations for rental housing. From zoning, construction, and financing this panel will touch on what can go well and what can go wrong. As a rapidly changing area of development the panel will also discuss recent policy changes, current municipal incentives, and financing conditions that will affect the future success of this housing type.

    Speakers

    Morgan Brewster

    CMSI Pacific

    Morgan Brewster began his financial career with the Financial Institutions Commission of British Columbia, the government regulator of Mortgage Brokers. He joined CMSI Pacific in 2013. As managing partner at CMSI Pacific, Morgan has been involved in the origination, underwriting, placement, and closing of more than $4 Billion of commercial mortgages across all classes, including term and construction financing of retail, office, industrial and multi-family residential. Additionally, Morgan is responsible for the overall management of the company and its strategic direction. Morgan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Calgary, and the Canadian Investment Manager designation from Canada Securities Institute. He is also a registered sub-mortgage broker in British Columbia and licensed Associate Broker in Alberta. Morgan is an active volunteer with South Vancouver Little League and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Crescent Beach Swimming Club.

    Sarah Christianson

    Polygon Homes Ltd.

    Sarah Christianson is an architect who has contributed to projects of varying scales throughout North America, from feasibility through construction, focusing her last three years in Los Angeles leading strategic growth and focusing on US rental projects. Her practice in Canada has focused on lower mainland mixed-use, residential, and rental projects. She returned to Vancouver to join Polygon as a Development Manager, where she is responsible for the successful execution of projects of varying scales and typologies. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design from University of Manitoba and a Masters of Architecture from the University of British Columbia, and is a registered architect in BC. Sarah has also served on numerous ULI committees, including ULI-LA’s Urban Marketplace and as chair of WLI’s GROW program in Los Angeles, and is a member of CREW.

    Mike Mackay

    President, Strand

    Mike Mackay, President of Strand, is responsible for overseeing all of Strand’s real estate activities in the Metro Vancouver market - the city he, his wife, and their two young children call home. Mike started Strand’s development platform after having worked as a Senior Development Manager for Onni Group, one of the largest, privately owned and operated developers in North America. During his time with Onni, Mike was responsible for managing the development of eleven sites across the Lower Mainland, comprising over 1,500 residential units and totaling over 2 million square feet of residential floor area plus approximately 800,000 square feet of commercial floor area. Subsequently, Mike managed the acquisitions, development and lending businesses for Dayhu Capital, a local family-owned developer and landlord before leaving to start Strand’s development business. Mike sits on the board of directors of the Urban Development Institute and St. George’s School. Fundamental to Mike's core principles is a conviction that: “For of those to whom much is given, much is required.” He and his family are directly involved in and support many local charities and community organizations, namely: St. Paul's Foundation, BC Centre for Substance Use, The Variety Club, Arts Umbrella, Mission Possible, Music Heals, BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital, The Salvation Army, Face of Today, Youth Education Farms and Face the World Foundation.

    Andrew Browne

    Director, Development, Starlight Investments

    Andrew Browne is Western Canada Development Manager for Starlight Developments, the development arm of Starlight Investments, and is working to deliver thousands of new rental units in Metro Vancouver and the Capital Region. Starlight Investments is a Canadian institutional investment company with more than 70,000 multi-family units under management, with a number of active rental housing development applications throughout BC. Andrew’s previous planning practice includes his work as an Associate in IBI Group’s Master Planning and Transit Oriented Development (TOD) unit, and prior to that he worked as a public sector planner in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan.
