ULI BC’s Partnership for Health and Equity’s third and final event, Economic Mobility and Housing Resiliency: Jobs and Housing, takes the work and knowledge from our previous two events, and calls the sector to action, encouraging folks to start actively participating and working towards reconciliation.

Moderated by Sheryl Peters (Provincial Director of Redevelopment at BC Housing), this panel will feature Garry Jobin (Senior Coordinator at BladeRunners), Kaela Schramm (Director of Projects and Planning at M’akola Development Services, and Steve Johnston (Executive Director at Community Impact Real Estate Society).

Highlighting some of the current opportunities in Indigenous procurement, and where opportunities can be expanded, this session will provide a discussion around some of the tools necessary in aligning Indigenous community design with social and urban planning practices. As our final event, we are shifting our focus towards the changes that can and should be made within the public and private sectors in supporting employment and housing opportunities for Indigenous communities, groups, organizations, and individuals. Focusing on policy pieces like Declaration of the Rights on Indigenous Peoples Act and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, this session will highlight some pre-existing partnerships with Indigenous groups as one example of how to move forward with reconciliation.

Although our Speaker Series is coming to an end, the work for the sector has just begun. We encourage you to check out our Resource Hub in guiding your company and your commitment to reconciliation.

Garry has also assisted with the housing development at the Woodward’s building side by side with the late Jim Green and Garry was also the very first recipient of GVUAS Aboriginal day Leadership Award. Having lived and worked on the DTES for the past 25 years, Garry is well known and well respected. Garry is of Cree decent and he is also a proud grandfather of six grandchildren. I have an issue on that day though. Councilor Bligh is bring a serious motion forward on that day that I’ll need to speak to in council. I won’t know the rough timing of this until next Tuesday. I’ll need to be there in person. We may need to have a back-up person for me just in case. Typically council breaks for lunch so fingers crossed this works but they can be unpredictable.
