    WLI BC's Leadership Certificate – Industrial Communities
    As the nature of work changes in our economy and society, how can historically industrial neighbourhoods adapt to accommodate the employment needs of tomorrow? No longer are industrial neighborhoods “back-of-house” spaces for a city; they are often located in high-value transit and amenity-rich locations and are quickly evolving into desirable locations for new businesses and residents. With these development pressures, how do existing businesses continue to provide the productive and cultural services a city needs?
     
    Using the South Flats neighbourhood in Vancouver and the Rock Bay Industry Arts and Innovation District in Victoria as case studies, panelists will explore topics such as balancing diverse uses; creating and celebrating a sense of place; engaging with multiple project constituents to find common ground; using design, planning and economic tools to support existing and emerging uses; and strategies to attract and keep the best global talent. Inspirational examples like Kings Cross in London, Pier 70 in San Francisco, Station F in Paris, and Chelsea in New York City show how valuable industrial urban fabric can support diverse contemporary uses. Discover how these communities are embracing sustainability, creativity, and culture to revitalize industrial areas into vibrant hubs of activity and commerce.
     
    Following the presentation and panel discussion, participants will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of South Flats, experiencing firsthand the transformation underway and gaining insights into the practical implementation of revitalization efforts.

    Speakers

    Adam Mitchell

    Low Tide Properties

    Currently responsible for Asset Management and Development activities for Low Tide Properties in Vancouver and Seattle. In this capacity I am primarily focused on the strategic direction and financial performance of a diverse portfolio of Creative and High-Tech Office, Life Sciences, Flex-Industrial, Retail, and Multifamily Rental properties in emerging neighbourhoods. Our goal is to act as a catalyst for change in the communities we invest in by creating great places and spaces that inspire people to achieve their own goals. Beyond my work at Low Tide Properties, I serve on numerous non-profit boards including for the Urban Land Institute of British Columbia, Catalyst Communities, and the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association.

    Quinn Anglin

    Manager of Economic Development, City of Victoria

    A Toronto native, Quinn joined the City of Victoria in 2014 with the Sustainable Planning and Community Development Department. In 2017 she moved to the Economic Development division, where she was shortly after promoted to her current role as the Manager of Economic Development. Quinn brings more than a decade of experience in communications, marketing, sales, and business management through careers in the public relations and tourism industries from the private sector, and she also owned and operated her own successful business in Victoria for several years. Quinn holds a BA in Interior Design and an Ec.D graduate certificate in Economic Development from the University of Waterloo. Recognized as an enthusiastic and warm professional, and an expert relationship builder, she seamlessly bridges the intersection of private and public sector realms. With a passion for supporting innovation and entrepreneurs, Quinn is a driving force in shaping collaborative environments for sustained economic growth. When she isn’t working, Quinn is a seasoned hockey mom, and can be found spending time with her 3 kids and exploring the outdoors.

    Amit Price Patel

    Partner, DIALOG

    A Partner of Urban Planning and Architecture at DIALOG, Amit is committed to making inclusive cities of opportunity and human connection. Over the course of his career, he has led the design of complex projects at many scales, including several award-winning mixed-use urban projects and neighbourhood master plans for public agencies, market rate developers, and non-profit organizations. Amit’s diverse portfolio of current projects includes innovation districts, Indigenous social housing, transit-oriented communities, and student housing. Amit’s ideas and projects have been shared widely through speaking engagements, interviews, and publications. Having worked in the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, St. Louis and Johannesburg, Amit believes in design approaches rooted in place. He has won or been on the winning teams for several international design competitions and has served as a Design Advisor for the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, as well as the Board President of Architects Designers Planners for Social Responsibility.
